You just hear the vigorous, smooth skip of a deep but young voice, hand in hand with the notes being strummed from a guitar. Luhrmann first truly introduces Elvis with one of his early songs playing on a record and over the radio after going right back to the beginning of Elvis’s career. But he collapses and his face is dropped into an ice bucket before you see past his cheek. You see his back as he walks down a hallway. There are brief glimpses of him and bursts of him singing late in life. To make us hear, feel and know what someone, some people, and some place truly are.Įlvis is talked about in the beginning. That music can give a voice to the essence of any individual, group, location, or moment. Arthur Schopenhauer said it speaks “of the thing itself.” Elvis proves he was right. It has a power that isn’t there in literature, painting, sculpture, and architecture. ![]() It was as if he’d stripped Apollo naked so I could see the sun radiate from every inch of the god’s skin. Had I pledge myself to an inferior god? Such was the extent that Luhrmann laid bare music’s power. I left the cinema after seeing Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis wondering if I’d made a mistake by becoming a writer, instead of a musician.
